So check out this quote from Sakurai way back when Robin/Lucina were first revealed. "At the end of the day, Chrom would just end up being another plain-old sword-wielder like Marth and Ike. Compared with other characters, he lacks any unique characteristics. Conversely, when the idea of including Robin came to mind, conceiving the character was so easy that I immediately saw how it would work." This quote can ab-so-LUTELY shag off for a number of reasons. Here are some of them:
- Weapon of choice is such an arbitrary reason to be upset about/exclude a character. People who complained about too many characters using swords were one of the worst things about Smash 4 speculation. It isn't about what you use: it's about how you use it. Just looking at attack/critical animations and cutscenes you can see all sorts of intricate swords play that could've easily made unique attacks that set him apart from Marth and Ike (since bare in mind those two take their specials from in game animations/cutscenes).
- Later went onto create Cloud, a sword based character. And no, the shape of his sword and the Limit mechanic don't change the fact that he has DK's fair, basically everyone in existence's bair, and heavily uses his sword in a conventional, Smash-y way throughout his moveset. By all definitions, he can still be classified as a sword fighter and he still ended up being loved by most people.
While I can definitely see the benefits of Robin over Chrom, mainly the fact that he adds diversity to the Fire Emblem cast so that it's not just swordwielders, you've gotta admit Chrom isn't as bland and potentialless as Sakurai let on. It would've taken a bit more work, but Sakurai has stretched source material before. He does it with the Fire Emblem characters, EarthBound characters, Donkey Kong, Duck Hunt Duo, Ice Climbers, the list goes on. It comes off as taking the easy way out and doing what interests him before...what should've happened, I guess? That sounds particularly entitled and I didn't even want Chrom that bad I just expected him; I have no other way to word it. And I mean, it is his creation so you give some leeway here and there for doing what he wants but at the same time you have to remember what kind of game Smash is and the fact that little things like this spiral into bigger things like Corrin and Bayonetta.
But that's enough of my "In Memory of this Poor Shepard Boy" speech. Back to your regularly scheduled program.
